Did You Know Volkswagen Once Built a Twin-Engine Golf?

Back in the turbo-crazy late ’80s, Volkswagen engineers decided one engine wasn’t enough. They shoe-horned two 1.8-liter 16-valve turbos—one driving the front wheels, the other the rear— into a humble Golf Mk2 to tackle the Pike’s Peak International Hill Climb. The result? A feather-weight hatch pushing 650 hp, rocketing from 0–60 mph in around 3.4 seconds, with selectable FWD, RWD, or AWD on the fly. A broken suspension joint ended the 1987 run just a quarter-mile from the finish, but the legend stuck: the Bi-Motor Golf proved how far you can stretch a platform with the right parts and creativity.
